Some children nervously wonder what they can expect when they first join us, so lets’ talk about what we do. Every child is given a points card which is used to record points they receive at the club. Once the card is full (at 100 points) they can “spend” it on two gifts from the treasure box. By the way, we celebrate every child’s birthday with an extra dip in the treasure box. We always take time to pray to give God thanks for all that He does for us, and especially for providing His Son to become the Saviour of the World. We will sing songs and choruses to help the children remember the Bible stories that they are being taught. The Bible is still the world’s best selling book, but many of us are unaware of the amazingly wise words that are found in it’s pages. Each week we help the children to learn by heart short verses from the Bible. Bible stories are told and there is an opportunity to test knowledge using a variety of tactile and electronic games and quizzes.
Finally let’s answer some FAQ’s?
What age do you have to be to join? We have two groups and this post is referring to the younger group for primary school children from 4 to 10 years of age. Once children reach secondary school then they are eligible to join the older group which runs from 8pm. The activities for the older group are tailored for their age and instead of a treasure box we occasionally take them on trips to McDonalds or the Ice Rink in Oxford.
Do I or my child have to be a Christian to join up? Not at all. Most of the children do not come from religious or church-going backgrounds and a warm welcome is extended to all.
Why do we do all this for free? Friday club is run by volunteers who are enthusiastic about the good news that the Bible brings. They have all personally benefited from this and most have had (or still do have) children that attend.
